Happy Holidays from A-1 Home Care!

Today at the corporate offices of A-1 Home Care, we are starting the Christmas season with a bang, by celebrating with holiday music and festive hats. the staff really enjoyed dressing up and taking pictures to show holiday spirit. Pictured above are members of our billing and social media department, demonstrating teamwork with a special photo!

A-1 Home Care sincerely wishes you a wonderful holiday in the upcoming weeks. With Christmas and New Year around the corner, this is truly a time to celebrate with family, and reconnect with old friends.

It's also a time to reconnect with age old traditions. One such tradition is trimming the tree. While Christmas may have changed a lot through the years, such momentos endure for generations.

In the 1950s, families used to gather together right after Thanksgiving in hunt for a perfect christmas tree. While today, the trees are purchased somewhat later, it's still a great joy to enjoy decorating it together as a family. The original Christmas tree existed in Germany, where they were typically decorated with lighted candles tied to branches. Considering the fire risk that entails, it's a relief we have electric lights instead!

A-1 Home Care takes pride in arranging compatible and affordable caregivers around Southern California. We have holiday caregivers available for the busy times during Christmas and New Years.

Happy Thanksgiving!

In 2010, Americans bought around 244 million turkeys for Thanksgiving, meaning we eat a whole lot of poultry; however, about 18 million turkeys went unsold, which is the case every year. Due to this abundance of bird, Swanson came up with a creative use for leftover turkey in 1953. They sold it as part of a packaged meal that individuals could heat up for convenience. We now refer to those as TV dinners. Delicious and resourceful!

Senior Care in San Gabriel Valley

Common sense and tradition trump modern habits when it comes to healthy eating. The place to be at dinner isn't in front of the tv, standing at the kitchen counter or in your car. As science indicates, people can lower their risk of obesity, diabetes, cancer and other illnesses simply by eating healthier- which starts at the dining table. New York times has embraced this "slow food" trend with a new series called "One dish, one hour" promoting simple one dish meals that take an hour to prepare. We at A-1 Home Care especially enjoyed this fritter recipe consisting of healthy ingredients:

 Mushroom and Spinach Frittata

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
1 10 ounce bag presliced mushrooms
Salt and freshly ground pepper
1 to 2 garlic cloves (to taste), minced
1 6-ounce bag baby spinach, rinsed
8 eggs
1/4 cup grated Parmesan (optional)
2 tablespoons low-fat milk

Home Care for Elderly and Senior in San Gabriel Valley

Katherine Boutin of the New York Times describes an embarrassing experience at a dinner party. Katherine wears a cochlear implant. Struggling to understand the words of her conversation partner- an author she admired- she was unable to recall the titles of his works. According to science, this hearing loss related to memory loss could be a common occurrence for select seniors. This phenomenon is called a "cognitive load" when the brain is preoccupied by translating sounds into words loses the processing power to search for a response. Furthermore, there is a strong connection between hearing loss and Alzheimers. Learn more about this sad connection here.

If a loved one has started to display signs of memory loss, we encourage you to take him/her to a doctor. Oftentimes, memory loss is a simple byproduct of aging but sometimes can be a sign of Alzheimer.
